Pharmaceutical procurement in our region can be complicated and risky. In low-resource settings, health teams face substandard medicines, falsified products, and over-inflated prices curtailing what can come in. And even in better-resourced places, pharmacists aren’t always confident to prescribe and distribute the most effective medicines possible. That’s why we work with health teams and trusted suppliers across our region, to secure the reliable, cost-effective medicines that people really need.
Tackling expensive, poor-quality medicines
The World Health Organisation estimates that 1 in 10 medical products in low- to middle-income countries is substandard or falsified. Low capacity for quality control and limited budgets restrict how well teams can manage the risk of poor-quality medicines and commodities. And with smaller order sizes and limited budgets, medicine prices can be disproportionately uncompetitive and expensive for teams in low-resource settings.
Working alongside health teams across the Asia-Pacific, we’re helping to improve ordering procedures, strengthen warehouse storage capacity, and connect people with trusted suppliers, to ensure teams across our region can access the highest quality health commodities possible.
Increasing knowledge to disburse the best medicines possible
Even when health teams have quality products on hand, pharmacists aren’t always confident or skilled to offer the most effective solution to a patient’s problem. We’re worried about the side effects, reliant on safe standbys, and often aren’t the people face-to-face with customers in a pharmaceutical setting. But we have safe, high-quality medicines available to us, and with training and support, pharmacists can get these products to the people they can help.
That’s why we’re training pharmacists in Australia to correctly and confidently prescribe Schedule 3 drugs – the most powerful medicines we have available, and what gives people the best possible chance at regaining full health.
